Andreas Vogt Nature Reserve

Area: 29.7 hectares (73.5 acres)

Ecology: Comprises several ecosystems, including Garry oak. We continue to identify and control invasive species such as Scotch broom to prevent further loss of Garry oak habitat and encourage regrowth.

Public Trails: 1.42 km with good views, both south and west. Dogs are permitted as long as they are on a leash.  Unfortunately, loose dogs disturb ground nesting birds and other critters who consider this their home.

Acquisition: Donated to SSIC in May 2003 by Oda Nowrath and Cordula Vogt.

History: The property was last logged in the 1980s and has a colourful history. It was originally known as "Bryant's Mountain" and later as "Goat Hill", the home of Colonel Jasper Bryant and his wife Dr. Meta Elliot. Their thriving cheese making endeavour had a ready market in Victoria. Meta also helped at the Lady Minto Hospital in Ganges as the anaesthetist.
