Alvin Indridson Nature Reserve AINR

Area: 129 hectares (320 acres)

Ecology: Half the land is in the rarest Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem in the province; the other half is in a dry maritime Coastal Western Hemlock ecosystem. It is mostly forested with meadow areas, a 4-acre lake, streams and many small wetlands. At least 6 species at risk have been found on the property.

Public Trails: Not open at this time. Hiking trails will be open to the public once they are established and marked.

Acquisition: April 2011. This reserve was a partial donation by the estate and family of Alvin Indridson. It was purchased with major financial assistance from the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Shaw Communications and other organizations and by donations from many private individuals.

History: The property was ex-forest land, logged in the 1980s. It was purchased in 1988 by Alvin Indridson, a businessman who lived most of his life in the Vancouver area. He upgraded the culverts on the road, but otherwise left the land to grow back. He always wanted to see the land become parkland and after his death in 2009, his family saw to it that his wishes were carried out.
